There is great excitement about the conservation milestones in Uganda as a new product is yet to be added to the list of tourist activities in Uganda as chimpanzees have been confirmed to exist in the misty and thick forest of Bwindi, the population of chimpanzees inhabiting this park is yet to be known, as the census findings are yet to be released.

The chimpanzees have been discovered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, following the just concluded census, which has brought good news in the conservation world about the existence of chimpanzees in this dense, misty forest.

For a long, there was suspicion of their existence but it was never confirmed, until Uganda Wildlife Authority in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute took a leap of faith to embark on a month’s survey in Bwindi to find if there are chimpanzees living in this rainy forest, if there are, how many are they in population and what habitat conditions are they exposed too? With the survey, chimpanzees were discovered, and a census was conducted, and we are yet to know how many individuals live here.

Chimp tracking in Uganda

Chimp tracking is one of the top-selling and exciting activities to do in Uganda or on a Uganda safari. Here is a sample package
5 Days Chimpanzee tracking safari
Chimp tracking involves visitors trekking into the forest where the chimps make their home in search of these primates. The trek takes you through thick forest, sometimes for longer hours depending on the movement of the chimps. Once found, you have a provision of 1 hour with the chimpanzees, observing them from a distance, as they are still wild. When close to the chimpanzees, improper human behavior is likely to cause agitation from the chimpanzees and therefore can turn violent, so they are what to do and what not to do when you are close to the chimps.

You will encounter these human-like primates with the intelligence equivalent to a 5-year-old, feeding, playing, swinging, and going about their lives in their natural home. It is one of the fulfilling activities offering once in a lifetime experience.

Prospects of Chimp Habituation/ Tracking

With the good news of the presence of chimpanzees in Bwindi, there is a great prospect of chimpanzee habituation in Bwindi that will make way for chimp tracking in Bwindi.

Bwindi is already a hotspot given the presence of Mountain Gorillas as their home, the park has over 1000 gorillas, and a section of them has been habituated and are open for gorilla tracking. Two more families are undergoing the habituation process in the Rushaga sector of the park aslo open for gorilla habituation experience.

The future of tourism is very bright, with so far noticable conservation efforts, leading to new products being added to the bucket list.
