Great Experience
This was my first visit to Africa. I was a bit uncomfortable before meeting the team. But later it was just home like experience. I am really thankful to the entire team of Gorillas And East Africa Safaris.

Great Experience
The tour was well-organized, and we enjoyed every bit of it. However, I wish we had more free time to explore on our own. Overall, a great experience!
General Questions
We’re committed to offering more than just travel products—we provide exceptional experiences.
Gorilla trekking is an unforgettable adventure where you hike through Uganda's lush rainforests to observe habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitat for one magical hour. Tracking Gorillas Uganda stands out with our expert local guides, personalized small-group experiences, strong conservation focus, reliable logistics, and competitive packages that include permits, transfers, accommodations, and support for memorable, responsible safaris.
Our tours primarily feature Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (home to over half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas and the most family groups) and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (with stunning volcanic scenery). We also combine gorilla experiences with other highlights like chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest or wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The current Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) gorilla permit fee is $800 USD per person (foreign non-residents) for a standard one-hour encounter. Yes — we include the permit in all our gorilla trekking packages to secure your spot early and handle the booking process seamlessly.
Permits are limited (only 8 people per gorilla family per day) and often sell out 6–12 months ahead, especially during peak dry seasons. We strongly recommend booking at least 3–6 months in advance, or up to a year for preferred dates and sectors (e.g., Buhoma, Ruhija, or Nkuringo).
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the best conditions with less rain, drier trails, and higher chances of shorter treks. Wet seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush scenery and fewer crowds but muddier paths.
Difficulty varies greatly — treks can last 30 minutes to 7+ hours depending on the gorilla family's location. Trails can be steep, muddy, and slippery. Moderate fitness is recommended; we offer options for easier sectors or porter services. Our guides tailor the pace to the group and provide support throughout.
The minimum age is 15 years (set by UWA regulations). Participants must be in good health and able to follow strict guidelines to protect the gorillas.
8. What should I bring/wear for the gorilla trek?
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots
- Long-sleeved shirt and long pants (quick-dry fabrics)
- Rain jacket/poncho and hat
- Gardening gloves (for nettles/thorns)
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Water bottle, snacks, and a small daypack
- Camera (no flash), binoculars optional We provide walking sticks and gaiters on request.
UWA limits groups to 8 trekkers per gorilla family. Our packages feature small-group departures (typically 2–8 people) or fully private options for a more exclusive experience.
Yes — it's very safe when following rules. Experienced UWA rangers (armed for protection) and our certified guides accompany every trek. Gorillas are gentle and habituated to humans, but we maintain a 7–10 meter distance and follow strict health & behavior protocols.
Rain is common in the rainforest — we provide ponchos and continue safely. Trackers locate families early, so sightings are almost guaranteed (success rate >95%). If gorillas aren't found (extremely rare), UWA may offer a partial refund or priority re-booking.
Yes — for a more immersive option, join the Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500 USD permit), where you spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas in training. It's more physically demanding and available in select Bwindi sectors.
No specific vaccinations are mandatory, but we recommend yellow fever (certificate may be checked), hepatitis A/B, typhoid, and routine shots. Bring malaria prophylaxis. A face mask may be required near gorillas to prevent disease transmission.
Absolutely! Popular add-ons include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, Big Five game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel, cultural village visits, or even golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga.
