What Is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

Gorilla Habituation Experience is the gradual process of helping a wild mountain gorilla family become comfortable with the presence of humans.

This process takes several years and is carried out by experienced conservationists, veterinarians, researchers, and Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

As a participant, you’ll become part of this conservation effort for one incredible day.

Instead of arriving after the gorillas have already settled into their daily routine, you’ll join the tracking team early in the morning and spend up to four hours observing the family as they feed, communicate, groom, rest, play, and move through the forest.

Where Does the Gorilla Habituation Experience Take Place?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is offered exclusively in the Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda.

Rushaga is home to the only habituation program open to visitors; there is now only one gorilla family available for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, meaning only 2 permits per day. This has been so since early this year 2026, when one family which had been undergoing habituation was opened for standard tracking. 

Rushaga sector combines ancient rainforest, dramatic hills, rich biodiversity, and carefully protected mountain gorilla habitat, creating the ideal setting for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience requires a special permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA); here are UWA tariffs for 2027. Unlike standard gorilla trekking permits, habituation permits are extremely limited, making early booking essential.

What You Need to Know about a Gorilla Habituation Experience?

♣ The Habituation Experience requires a certain level of fitness as you get to trek for hours in mountainous terrain plus the thick and misty forest.

♣ Respect their Space; you are an intruder in their wild. It’s not only good to respect the gorillas, but it’s also safe for the gorillas and you too, and others in the group; keep that required distance and adhere to all the safety protocols and rules in place. ♣ The habituation experience costs more than an ordinary gorilla tracking, with a permit going at $ 1500 in 2026 & $1800 effective 1st January 2027. Irrespective of the price, it’s very worth it, and very rewarding in all ways.

♣ Book Habituation Permits in advance; these permits are only 2 per day, so it’s advisable to book in advance.

♣ The drier season from December into March, and June to September, is the best time to do the habituation experience. Rainy season is trickier, as your treks are easily interrupted. Regardless, Gorilla Habituation is an all-year-round activity.
