Kigali, Lake Kivu, Akagera National Park, Volcanoes National Park

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet your guide. Enjoy a short city orientation (optional Genocide Memorial visit for historical context) before a scenic 2.5–3 hour drive westward to the shores of Lake Kivu (Gisenyi or Kibuye area). Settle into your lakeside lodge, unwind with lake views, and perhaps take a short evening stroll or boat ride as the sun sets over the water.

A full day to soak in the beauty of Lake Kivu — enjoy a leisurely boat cruise to explore islands, fishing villages, and birdlife, or simply relax on the beach with swimming and fresh lake breezes. Optional activities include a community coffee tour, local market visit, or a gentle bike ride along the shore. Overnight at your lakeside retreat.

Morning departure (about 1.5–2 hours drive) through breathtaking hilly countryside to Volcanoes National Park. Arrive in Kinigi/Musanze area, check into your lodge near the park, and spend the afternoon on an optional Iby'Iwacu cultural village visit to learn about local Batwa traditions, traditional dances, and Rwandan life. Evening briefing for tomorrow's gorilla trek.

The highlight of the trip — early morning gorilla permit briefing at park headquarters, followed by a guided trek into the misty forests of the Virungas. Track and spend one magical hour with a family of mountain gorillas, observing their gentle behaviors up close. Afternoon free for relaxation at the lodge or an optional golden monkey trek/diurnal primate walk.

After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park (approximately 4.5–5.5 hours drive through scenic Rwanda). Arrive in the afternoon for your first game drive or a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema, spotting hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and perhaps elephants or giraffes at the water's edge. Overnight in the park or at a nearby lodge with savanna views.

Early morning game drive in Akagera to search for the Big Five (including the park's reintroduced black rhinos), plus lions, leopards, and vast herds of plains game. Return to the lodge for breakfast, then depart for Kigali (about 2–2.5 hours drive). Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final lunch in Kigali or transfer directly to the airport for departure.
