Tsavo East National Park, located in southeastern Kenya near the town of Voi, is one of Africa’s largest and most iconic wildlife sanctuaries. Established in 1948, it spans a vast 13,747 km² (about 5,308 sq mi), making it Kenya’s biggest national park—roughly nine times the size of the Maasai Mara. Together with its sister park, Tsavo West, it forms a massive protected wilderness covering around 4% of Kenya’s land area.
The landscape is a classic semi-arid “theatre of the wild”: endless open savannah plains, acacia woodlands, scrublands, and dramatic features like the 300-km-long Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow). The Galana River (with palm-fringed banks) and Voi River serve as vital lifelines, drawing wildlife during dry periods. Reddish-orange soil coats the terrain—and the animals—giving the park its signature dusty hue.
Tsavo East is renowned for its dust-red elephants, which roll in the iron-rich soil for protection against parasites and the sun. Herds are frequently seen wallowing or crossing the plains. The park hosts the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo), plus giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, cheetahs, and diverse antelopes like lesser kudu, gerenuk, and oryx. Birdlife is prolific, with over 500 species recorded. It is also famous in history for the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”—two maneless lions that terrorized railway workers in 1898
Wildlife viewing is excellent in the open terrain, especially around the Galana River and Aruba Dam. Game drives reveal wide panoramas of animals against big skies. The climate is warm and dry, with the best visiting times being the dry seasons (June–October and January–February), when animals concentrate at water sources and vegetation is thinner for clearer sightings.
