FAQS

Common questions about Kenya

Most international visitors no longer need a traditional visa. Instead, you must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online before travel via the official portal (etakenya.go.ke). This applies to nearly all foreign nationals, including children and infants. Requirements typically include: a passport valid for at least 6 months with one blank page, a recent photo/selfie, contact details, travel itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Approval usually comes quickly, but apply in advance to avoid issues. Some nationalities may have exemptions (check the official site), but almost all tourists need the eTA.

The best time for most visitors, especially safaris and the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara, is the dry season from June to October (peak wildlife viewing, fewer mosquitoes, pleasant temperatures).

  • July–October: Excellent for the dramatic river crossings during the migration; August–September is the busiest and most dramatic period.
  • January–February: Also excellent (dry, great game viewing, fewer crowds than peak migration months).
  • March–May (long rains) and November–December (short rains): Greener landscapes, lower prices, and fewer tourists, but some roads can be muddy and wildlife more dispersed. Coastal areas (like Mombasa or Diani) are good year-round, with slightly cooler and drier conditions from June to October.

Kenya is generally safe for tourists in popular areas (national parks, Maasai Mara, Nairobi's tourist zones, and coastal resorts), and tourism is a major economic sector with dedicated support. However, exercise caution due to risks of petty crime (especially in cities), occasional terrorism threats, and regional issues. Many governments advise a high degree of caution overall. Avoid border areas with Somalia (northeast), parts of coastal north of Malindi, and certain northern counties due to higher risks. Stick to reputable operators, avoid walking alone at night in cities, use registered taxis/rideshares, and stay informed via your embassy or the Kenya Tourism Federation's 24-hour safety line. Well-organized safaris and lodges are considered very safe.

  • Maasai Mara National Reserve — Iconic for the Great Migration, Big Five sightings, and hot-air balloon rides.
  • Amboseli National Park — Stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro with large elephant herds.
  • Tsavo National Parks (East & West) — Vast landscapes, red elephants, and diverse wildlife.
  • Samburu & Laikipia — Unique northern wildlife and conservation experiences.
  • Nairobi — Nairobi National Park (urban safari), Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and vibrant markets.
  • Coastal Kenya — Diani Beach, Watamu, Lamu (UNESCO site) for beaches, snorkeling, and Swahili culture.
  • Mount Kenya — Climbing/hiking for adventure seekers.
  • Consult a doctor well in advance. Recommended/required:

    • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if arriving from or transiting a risk country).
    • Malaria prophylaxis (most areas below ~2,500m are at risk; consult for your itinerary).
    • Routine vaccines (hepatitis A/B, typhoid, rabies if high exposure). Drink bottled/boiled water, use insect repellent, and consider travel insurance covering medical evacuation. As of recent updates, some COVID-related requirements may no longer apply, but check current Ministry of Health guidelines.
