Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a swamp that covers approximately 4 km, featuring great vegetation and a forest that attracts a diverse range of wildlife, from monkeys to birds, making the swamp their home. The swamp has a list of about 200 bird species resident; including the famous Great Blue Turaco seen high up in trees is the swamp’s top gem, Parrots too can be seen and plenty of other birds, like the , Kingfishers seen on reeds and Hornbills, besides birds, the swamp is home to different species of primates and mammals. It is a birder’s paradise given its rare and endemic bird species.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a few kilometers from Kibale Forest National Park which is the top destination for chimpanzee tracking, given its high concentration. A visit to Bigodi is always a must, done before chimp tracking or after chimp tracking.
Guided Nature Walk
A nature walk starts with a local guide assigned to you, it can be a female or male guide, who leads into the swamp, but the hike will lead you through local farms, before entering the swamp, once in the swamp, you will begin to look out for the iconic bird the great blue turaco, you will proceed jumping and crossing water streams into deep the swamp where the thickness of nature is felt, you will hear nothing else but surrounded by thick and tangible nature, such an amazing experience. Different trails take you to different parts of the swamp, and only the Bigodi’s guides know the trails well, as you nature, you will catch another trail that will lead you to see lots of monkeys from the colobus monkeys to grey-cheeked monkeys and even more, another trail leads you to the edges of the swamp with an opportunity to see local communities, children, and adults tend to their farms.
You will then connect to the Murram road within the swamp, where your driver/guide will be waiting for you. Nature takes about 3 hours, and it’s not straining, the trails are well laid out, and the walk from the start to the end is an interesting venture.
To make it easier for the nature walk in the swamp, wooden pathways were fixed, on the pathways, especially on slippery trails.
Wildlife
Birds; the swamp is a birder’s paradise given its good list of birds including the Great Blue Turaco, Hornbills, Turacos, Parrots, Cranes, and Kingfishers.
Endemic species include; Black-capped Apalis, Blue-headed Sunbird, Collared Apalis, Dusky Crimsonwing, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, White-spotted Flufftail, Black-crowned Waxbill, Yellow-billed Barbet, White-breasted Negrofinch:
Animals
Primates: Bigodi swamp has about 8 primate species that are easily seen during the walk, the famous Black and White Colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, Red Colobus, Vervet Monkey, Blue Monkey, the blue monkey, Red Tailed Monkey, L’hoest Monkey and Olive Baboons.
Mammals: In the swamp, some mammals are present and can be spotted if you are lucky, they include bushbucks, otters, sitatungas, bushbucks, and otters.
