Drive east from Kigali (about 2.5–3 hours) to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only true savannah park and home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino — with lions reintroduced successfully).

• Day 2: Afternoon game drive through the rolling plains, spotting zebra, giraffe, topi, impala, and herds of buffalo. Check into a lodge overlooking the park.

• Day 6: The highlight — mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. • Day 7: Transfer to Gisenyi (Rubavu, about 1–1.5 hours), the charming lakeside border town on Lake Kivu. Drive south along the stunning Lake Kivu shoreline (about 3–4 hours from Gisenyi to Kibuye/Karongi). This stretch features winding roads, terraced hills, and breathtaking lake views.

In Kibuye, unwind in one of Rwanda’s most picturesque lakeside towns. Activities include:

• Boat trips to islands (e.g., Napoleon’s Island or Peace Island)
• Kayaking or paddleboarding on the calm waters
• Hiking or biking sections of the Congo Nile Trail
• Visiting coffee plantations
• Sunset drinks overlooking the lake

The area feels tranquil and rejuvenating, with pine-covered hills and fishing villages. Enjoy fresh tilapia and lakeside sunsets. Two nights here allow time to truly relax and soak in the beauty of Lake Kivu, Africa’s sixth-largest lake.

Continue south from Kibuye to Nyungwe Forest National Park (about 2–3 hours). Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, a biodiversity hotspot with 13 primate species.

• Day 10: Arrive and settle in. Afternoon nature walk or tea plantation visit (Rwanda produces excellent tea here).
• Day 11: Chimpanzee trekking — track habituated chimps through the misty forest (can take several hours). In the afternoon, experience the thrilling canopy walkway (suspended 50–70m above the forest floor) for panoramic views and a chance to spot birds, monkeys, and butterflies.
• Day 12: Another adventure — choose a waterfall hike (e.g., Isumo Falls), colobus monkey trek, or guided forest trail for birdwatching (over 300 species). The forest feels ancient, alive, and incredibly peaceful.

Nyungwe offers a wonderful primate and nature immersion after the open savannah and volcanoes.

Drive to Butare (Huye, about 1–2 hours from Nyungwe). This historic town is Rwanda’s intellectual and cultural center.

Visit the excellent Rwanda National Museum (with artifacts on Rwandan history, kings, and traditions), the Royal Palace or nearby sites, and perhaps a genocide memorial for deeper context. Stroll the lively streets, enjoy local cuisine, and interact with students from the university. Butare provides a thoughtful, human-centered end to the wildlife adventures.

Drive back to Kigali (about 2–2.5 hours from Butare). Depending on your flight time, enjoy last-minute shopping for souvenirs (coffee, handicrafts) or a relaxed lunch. Transfer to the airport for your departure, carrying unforgettable memories of Rwanda’s wild places and warm people.
