Other Activities at the Kyaninga Lodge

Crater Lake Walks: The area surrounding Lake Kyaninga offers scenic walking trails with spectacular viewpoints and opportunities to observe local communities and birdlife. Guests can hike around the crater rim and learn about the geological history of the region.

Explore Lake Kyaninga: Lake Kyaninga is a gem, one of the clearest lakes of western Uganda’s many crater lakes – Kasenda Craters. It is 220 meters deep with a very high mineral content, which prevents the growth of water plants and algae. Experience the lake whilst kayaking, which is done on request before your lake experience. Lake Kyaninga is free from bilharzia, one of the few Kasenda craters that is safe.  You can also swim in Lake Kyaninga as it is safe. The unique experience of swimming or exploring the lake will leave you calm and refreshed, the perfect antidote to a long chimp tracking safari.

Swimming and Relaxation: Kyaninga’s infinity swimming pool overlooks the crater lake and provides one of Uganda’s most scenic swimming experiences. The pool area is ideal for relaxing after a day of chimpanzee trekking.

Birdwatching: The crater lakes region and nearby Kibale Forest support an incredible diversity of birdlife, with common sightings such as the Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill, African Grey Parrot, Ross’s Turaco, Green-breasted Pitta, and Yellow-spotted Barbet. Our experts recommend an extension nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for more sightings and other primates.

Cultural Experiences: Kyaninga Lodge has community engagement programs through the Kyaninga Child Development Center that caters to children with disabilities, which visitors can visit and volunteer for. There is an option for a cultural walk that takes you through local communities, market visits, and traditional storytelling experiences that showcase the heritage of the Toro Kingdom, meet women weaving, taste the local beer, and visit the traditional herbalists.

Forest Walk: The forest walk takes you into the forest where Kyaninga Lodge is situated. The forest trail offers visitors a chance for a nature walk, experiencing nature, watching birds, watching some primates, mostly the colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and more to see are the bat caves, and many plants. The forest trail is a little challenging given its location at the rim of the craters, expect some steepness, all the same, it’s worth the visit, visitors are rewarded with sights and sounds of the virgin forest.
