Kenya, officially the Republic of Kenya (Jamhuri ya Kenya in Swahili), is a vibrant country in East Africa situated on the equator. It’s renowned for its stunning natural diversity, world-class wildlife safaris, rich cultural heritage, and role as a major economic and innovation hub in the region.
Common questions about Kenya
Most international visitors no longer need a traditional visa. Instead, you must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online before travel via the official portal (etakenya.go.ke). This applies to nearly all foreign nationals, including children and infants. Requirements typically include: a passport valid for at least 6 months with one blank page, a recent photo/selfie, contact details, travel itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Approval usually comes quickly, but apply in advance to avoid issues. Some nationalities may have exemptions (check the official site), but almost all tourists need the eTA.
The best time for most visitors, especially safaris and the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara, is the dry season from June to October (peak wildlife viewing, fewer mosquitoes, pleasant temperatures).
Kenya is generally safe for tourists in popular areas (national parks, Maasai Mara, Nairobi's tourist zones, and coastal resorts), and tourism is a major economic sector with dedicated support. However, exercise caution due to risks of petty crime (especially in cities), occasional terrorism threats, and regional issues. Many governments advise a high degree of caution overall. Avoid border areas with Somalia (northeast), parts of coastal north of Malindi, and certain northern counties due to higher risks. Stick to reputable operators, avoid walking alone at night in cities, use registered taxis/rideshares, and stay informed via your embassy or the Kenya Tourism Federation's 24-hour safety line. Well-organized safaris and lodges are considered very safe.
