Discover Mount Elgon: The World’s Largest Ancient Caldera - Uganda's Majestic Extinct Volcano
Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano situated on the Uganda- Kenyan border. This extinct shield volcano had its last eruption about 2 million years ago, making it a safe volcano to hike. Mount Elgon is characterized by its broad, shield-like profile, unlike the steep, conical shape of stratovolcanoes; shield volcanoes have gentle slopes formed by the flow of low-viscosity basaltic lava. Over millions of years, this breaks down to create extremely fertile soils, making Mt Elgon valued for its high-quality Arabica coffee and a major food-growing area.
Mountain Elgon is one of East Africa’s most spectacular yet underrated natural wonders. Rising to 4,321 meters (14,177 feet) above sea level at Wagagai Peak, Mount Elgon offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, waterfalls, caves, and some of the finest hiking experiences in Africa. Mountain Elgon remains a hidden gem waiting to be explored by adventurers, hikers, birdwatchers, and photographers who wish for an authentic wilderness experience.
The base of Mt Elgon is 80km wide and features the largest mountain caldera in the world. Mount Elgon is a protected area within the Mount Elgon National Park, which covers about 1,279 km² shared between Uganda and Kenya. Mt Elgon National Park Uganda side covers about 1,110km² and the smaller portion is covered by Mount Elgon National Park Kenya– 169km².
The Geological History of Mountain Elgon
Mountain Elgon is one of the oldest extinct volcanoes in East Africa. Geologists estimate that volcanic activity began more than 24 million years ago, making it significantly older than Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro.
At its peak, the volcano is believed to have towered over 5,000 meters high. Millions of years of erosion gradually reduced its height, creating one of its most remarkable features—a vast volcanic caldera measuring approximately 40 kilometers across.
Today, this caldera ranks among the largest intact volcanic calderas in the world and remains one of Mountain Elgon’s most fascinating attractions.
The Peaks of Mountain Elgon
Mountain Elgon consists of several peaks, each offering unique views and trekking opportunities.
Wagagai Peak (4,321m); The highest point on the Ugandan side and the ultimate goal for most trekkers.
Sudek Peak (4,303m); Located near the Kenya-Uganda border and offering panoramic mountain views.
Koitobos Peak (4,222m); The highest peak on the Kenyan side.
Mubiyi Peak (4,210m); A scenic summit often visited during multi-day treks.
Together, these peaks provide spectacular hiking opportunities and unforgettable mountain experiences.

Local History of Mount Elgon
The name “Elgon” is believed to originate from the Maasai word “Elgonyi,” which means the “breast”, as its shape resembles that of a human breast.
Local communities, such as the Bagisu tribe (Bamasaba People), refer to the mountain as “Masaba,” which is named after their founding father. The Bamasaaba are believed to be one of the oldest Bantu tribes of Eastern Uganda, originally living high up on the slopes of Mt Elgon to avoid attack from other tribes. They say that a man called Mundu, whose ancestors migrated from the Ethiopian mountains via Lake Turkana, settled in the upper reaches above the caldera where game was plentiful, and caves were many. Mundu had two sons, Masaba and Kundu, and lived in a large cave at the base of Masaba Peak (Jackson’s Summit) at 4,152 metres. Masaba became leader of the tribe, and his descendants produced the Bamasaaba people.
Why You Should Choose to Hike Mountain Elgon
Incredible Hiking and Trekking
Mountain Elgon offers some of the most rewarding trekking routes in Africa.
The park has severalMount Elgon Hiking trails, including Piswa, Bushiyi, Sipi, Sasa Trail and the sister Bugiboni Trail; however, the Sasa Trail is the easiest and most developed — with waterfalls, inspiring montane forests and stunning views. In September 2023, Mr John Hunwick, formerly from Australia, signed a concession with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to develop and operate the Sasa Trail. He created a new loop trail capturing the beauty and stunning views along the Mukooka Ridge, and changed the park entrance from steep metal ladders to a new trail passing under the 61-metre Nabunyifu Falls — much easier, with incredible views as far as Mbale city and beyond. The trail also passes over the outstanding Masaba Table at 4,024 metres and directly below Masaba Summit, providing a fantastic option for hikers to climb and enjoy awesome views across the caldera. Unlike many high-altitude mountains, its slopes are less crowded and accessible to hikers with moderate fitness levels.
