What Are Mountain Gorillas?

Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are one of the two subspecies of eastern gorillas and among humanity’s closest relatives, sharing approximately 98% of our DNA.

They live in close-knit family groups led by a dominant silverback, whose role is to protect the group, guide daily movements, and resolve conflicts. Families also include adult females, blackbacks (young males), juveniles, and playful infants, each contributing to the group’s strong social bonds.

Unlike many wild animals, mountain gorillas are gentle,  calm, intelligent, and highly social; however, wild silverbacks can charge and endanger you, so strict safety protocols, plus the rules and regulations comparing how you should behave beforehand, must be observed to avoid bad incidents. Where Do Mountain Gorillas Live in Uganda?

Mountain gorillas inhabit only two isolated forest ecosystems in the world.

The Silverback: The silverback is the dominant adult male, recognized by the silver hair across his back. He leads the family, protects its members, and decides where they feed, rest, and build nests.

Adult Females: Female gorillas nurture their young, build strong social relationships, and play a vital role in maintaining family stability.

Blackbacks: These younger males are not yet dominant but gradually develop the strength and experience needed to lead families of their own.

Juveniles: Curious and energetic, juveniles spend much of their time climbing, wrestling, and exploring, making them some of the most entertaining members of the group to observe.

How to See Mountain Gorillas in the Wild

Gorilla Hour is here to help you see and have an experience with the mountain gorillas in Uganda. Our Gorilla tracking safaris give you a chance to encounter the mountain gorillas standing face to face and a few meters away; you will have a guided trek through the thick forest, steep terrain, highlands, valleys, and cross streams to get to these awesome apes. The process is called Gorilla Tracking. Your adventure begins with an early morning briefing before experienced rangers lead small groups into the rainforest, following fresh signs left by the gorillas.

This gorilla trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes hours searching the forest for the gorillas, depending on where the family is located that day, they move from place to place within the forest in search for food, sometimes you can find them close by, sometimes they travel to distant locations or high up in the highlands, where they are is where you go, if they are located far, then the trek will take some hows. The trek is not predictable; you just keep hiking and trekking until you find them.

The overall trekking exercise can take up to 6 hours or more, including the 1 Hour you spend with the gorillas. During the gorilla trekking exercise, the reward comes when you finally find the gorillas; you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they feed, groom, rest, play, and interact naturally. It is a wildlife encounter unlike any other.

Then you will trek back out of the forest to the endpoint, where join your guide and head back to the lodge.

How close can I get?

Visitors are generally required to maintain a distance of around 7 metres (23 feet) whenever possible. Rangers guide every encounter to protect both gorillas and visitors. You have to follow the rules and regulations for safety.
