Buhoma sector lies within the lush tropical rainforest of Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its incredible biodiversity and home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Buhoma lies north of Bwindi, making it a main gateway into Bwindi, as it’s the most accessible sector for travelers coming from Kampala and Queen Elizabeth National Park, particularly.
It’s the original gorilla tracking sector in Uganda, opened in 1993, and still the most visited. The birthplace of Mountain gorilla trekking, where Uganda’s gorilla tourism began and where its soul still lingers
Buhoma offers easier terrain compared to other sectors, ideal for older or less experienced trekkers.
You might meet the Mubare family, the first habituated gorilla group, or the Rushegura group, known for lingering near lodges, yes, gorillas just outside your window of Lodges within the park, like Buhoma Lodge, Gorilla Forest Lodge, Mahogany Springs, and others.
Buhoma is situated in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. Here is how Buhoma is accessed from;
Kampala; The sector is approximately 8–10 hours by road from Kampala
Kihihi Airstrip is about 2–3 hours for travelers on a flying safari from Entebbe International Airport/ Kajjansi Airstrip.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is about 4-5hours, via Ishasha Sector takes more hours as one may not bypass the tree-climbing lions.
Kigali via Gatuna/Katuna border to Kabale, Kihihi, Butogota, about 5-6Hours, by road.
You’ll track one of five habituated groups:
Mubare – the oldest family, habituated in 1991 and opened to tourists in 1993.
Habinyanja – known for its large size and dynamic social structure.
Rushegura – often found near the park boundary, offering shorter treks.
Katwe and Muyambi – newer additions, expanding visitor options.
Tracking gorillas in Buhoma starts with the early morning briefings, where anticipation begins, guides share stories of the Mubare silverback’s lineage so amazing to take in. After the briefing rangers assign you a gorilla group based on your fitness and interest.
You are driven to your starting point of the trek depending on the location of your family. The rangers will lead you into the forest with the sounds of nature, birdsong hiking high up in the rolling highlands in search of the rare mountain gorillas with the thrill of not knowing when or where the gorillas will appear. The trails are well-established yet unpredictable, winding through waterfalls, tangled vines, and sudden clearings. Some treks are short, others stretch into hours. But every step is layered with anticipation -Was that a branch snap? A distant grunt?.
Gorilla Treks remain challenging and unpredictable, typically lasting 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorilla group’s location and movements triggered by the food supply.
Once the gorilla family is found, you’ll spend 1 hour observing the gorillas in their natural habitat. Many recall the moments of silence when they see a silverback reclining in a sunlit glade, juveniles tumbling in play, a mother cradling her infant with human-like tenderness. One traveler described the experience as “being seen by something ancient and knowing.” Another wrote, “The baby gorilla looked into my lens, then into my soul.”
Standing close to the mountain gorillas awakens something sacred in you and never leaves you the same; it is a moment that is unlike others, established, it’s a connecting moment to these rare apes. It’s emotional and profound. After spending that intimate hour with the gorillas, your ranger will escort you out of the presence of the gorillas, but with a heart full of special moments and memories of the gorillas that last forever. You will trek back through the forest to the starting point, where your driver/guide picks you up to the Lodge. Every trekker is awarded a certificate upon completion of the trek, something you take home to remind you of your magical encounter with the gorillas in the wild.
Some days, the gorillas are near, like the Rushegura often lingers close to the park boundary. Other days, the trek stretches into hours, testing stamina and spirit. But always, the reward is profound.
Trekking in Buhoma is less challenging compared to other sectors, especially Nkuringo, which is established with steep terrains.
Buhoma hosts several habituated mountain gorilla families available for trekking. These gorilla groups are accustomed to human presence, allowing visitors to spend a magical hour observing their natural behaviors. Visitors can track one of the following families: Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe, and Muyambi, with each family offering a unique trekking experience depending on the group’s location and movement patterns. Because of the number of families, only 40 permits/ trekkers are allowed to track the gorillas in Buhoma per day.
