Forest Suite: The Forest Suites increase the sense of space and immersion; at approximately 50 square metres, they include a king-size bed, bathroom facilities, fireplace, outdoor shower and private veranda. This is an excellent choice for guests who want to feel surrounded by the landscape.

The outdoor shower is particularly appealing after a day outdoors, while the private veranda provides somewhere to sit quietly and watch the changing light across the volcanic landscape.

Superior Forest Suite: For guests who prefer additional living space, the 70-square-metre Superior Forest Suite offers a more expansive retreat. The suite includes a king-size bed, lounge area, fireplace, rain shower, outdoor shower and private veranda. This category works particularly well for couples celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or special occasion. It gives you enough space to slow down rather than simply return to a room and sleep.

Sanctuary Suite: If you are looking for the most exclusive accommodation at Sambora, the Sanctuary Suite is where I would look first. There are only two, each measuring approximately 80 square metres. They feature a heated plunge pool, outdoor shower, bathtub and rain shower, fireplace, lounge space, private dining and a private veranda. This is the suite category I would consider for a honeymoon or milestone journey where the accommodation itself should feel like part of the celebration.

Imagine returning from your gorilla trek, slipping into a warm bath or heated plunge pool, ordering a private dinner and ending the evening beside your fireplace. That is a very different way to experience a gorilla safari.

Dining at Sambora Kinigi

What Can You Do Around Sambora?

Gorilla trekking
This is the headline experience, but it does not have to be the only reason you stay. There are other interesting and rewarding  activities, including options such as:

Golden Monkey Tracking
Besides the magical gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking provides another opportunity for visitors to track these fast-moving apes, one of the most beautiful primates with their striking colors; they are endemic to the Virunga conservation area, particularly in Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. It will be such a regret to track these rare primates that live in the highlands, just like the mountain gorillas. The trek also takes 2-4 hours of exploring the volcanic misty forest to encounter another remarkable primate species.

Volcano Hiking
This is for active travelers; while at Sambora, you can choose to explore Volcanoes National Park in a more adventurous way:  hiking to the two Volcanoes of the 8 Viringu Ranges; these include Mount Bisoke and Mountain Karisimbi. Hiking will add a completely different dimension to your visit to Volcanoes National Park and a Rwanda safari. This allows you not to focus typically on wildlife, but rather to experience the geological landscape of the Virunga region.

If you are planning a Rwanda gorilla trekking honeymoon, Sambora deserves serious consideration.

For honeymoon couples, I would consider combining a Kigali city tour, a drive to Volcanoes National Park and stay at Sambora Kinigi, encounter mountain gorillas during the  Gorilla Trekking adventure/ Golden Monkey Tracking / Hike to Dian Fossey’s grave/Mount Bisioke or Karisimbi, and wind down at Lake Kivu. This itinerary gives you a beautiful progression from Rwanda’s capital to the volcanoes and finally towards the relaxing shores of Lake Kivu.

Sambora for Families;
Sambora can also work well for families who want to combine wildlife, culture and comfortable accommodation. The smaller scale means families can enjoy a more personal environment, while activities can be selected according to interests and energy levels.

However, gorilla trekking itself has age requirements set by the relevant authorities, so families travelling with children below 15 years old should plan the safari accordingly. The surrounding cultural, nature and community experiences can provide meaningful alternatives while eligible family members engage in gorilla trekking.

My Safari Expert Advice: How Many Nights Should You Stay?

If your only objective is gorilla trekking, you could technically build a short stay around the trek.

But I would not recommend rushing this destination.

Two nights give you a practical introduction to Kinigi and enough time to experience the gorilla trek.

Three nights gives you considerably more breathing room and allows you to combine gorilla trekking with another experience such as golden monkey tracking, cultural activities , or a volcano hike.

For a honeymoon or luxury private journey, I would seriously consider three nights.
