New Gorilla Families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The newly opened gorilla families are located within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a home to half the world’s population of the mountain gorillas.
The new gorilla families are Nshanjare gorilla family in Rushaga and Happy gorilla family in Buhoma. These newly habituated families are located in popular trekking regions of Rushaga sector, the same location were gorilla habituation experience takes place, and Buhoma the oldest and first location for gorilla trekking in Uganda, with The Mubare Gorilla Family as the first to be tracked in Uganda in 1993, 2 years after the habituation process began.
Prior to the opening for the public these families under went a habituation process, where trained rangers, zoologists, Doctors and researchers gradually introduced the wild gorillas to human presence by following the gorillas from the time they awoke to when they built their nests, while observing their behavior and reaction to human presence without interrupting their lives. The habituation process is a slow process which can take anywhere from 2 to 5 years depending on how the wild gorillas cop with the presence of humans. Habituated gorillas are still very much wild difference they are not highly bothered by your presence only if you don’t get to close or behavior in a way that triggers them, which is why UWA has well stipulated gorilla tracking rules that every visitor must adhere to.
Gorilla tracking in done in two more different sectors of Bwindi; Nkuringo and Ruhija together making a total of four gorilla trekking locations in Bwindi alone. Each of these location offers a unique trekking experience, intensity and terrain but the reward is the same: an awe- inspiring Gorilla hour with a wild gorilla family wildly close.
