Nkuringo Family
The sector’s original habituated gorilla family is known for its remarkable conservation story and remains one of Uganda’s most sought-after trekking experiences.
Led by an impressive silverback, this family has played a significant role in gorilla tourism within southern Bwindi.
Bushaho Family
Habituated in recent years, the Bushaho family provides another exceptional trekking opportunity within Nkuringo’s lush rainforest.
Its members often travel through steep mountain terrain, rewarding trekkers with spectacular scenery along the journey.
Because gorillas are wild animals, the specific family assigned on your trekking day depends on permit availability, conservation management, and the location of the gorillas.
What Is Gorilla Trekking Like in Nkuringo?
Every trek begins early in the morning with a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
After learning about gorilla behavior, conservation, and trekking guidelines, you’ll join a small group of no more than eight visitors before entering the forest.
As expert trackers guide you through ancient rainforest, every broken branch, fresh footprint, and feeding site brings you closer to the gorillas.
The hike itself is an unforgettable adventure.
You’ll cross forest streams, climb mountain ridges, and walk beneath towering trees alive with birds and butterflies. Along the way, your ranger shares fascinating insights into Bwindi’s unique ecosystem and the incredible conservation efforts protecting its wildlife.
Then comes the moment you’ve been waiting for.
A silverback emerges from the vegetation. Young gorillas swing through the vines while mothers gently care for their infants. For one extraordinary hour, you’ll quietly observe their natural behavior, gaining a profound appreciation for one of the world’s rarest wildlife encounters.
At Gorilla Hour, we ensure every detail—from your permits and accommodation to your transfers and experienced guides—is arranged seamlessly, allowing you to focus on the adventure itself.
How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo?

Nkuringo, on the other hand, is much closer to Kigali and Mgahinga than Buhoma.

Nkuringo has more breathtaking landscape and scenery compared to Buhoma; in Nkuring you get to enjoy the stunning views of Lake Mutanda that has its backdrop of the Virunga ranges.
Because of its terrain and the steeper rolling hills, Nkuringo is more demanding when it comes to climbing, has steeper slopes and deep valleys, which makes gorilla trekking more challenging, yet so rewarding. For visitors who want a gentle terrain, Buhoma is for you.
Easier accessible to other safari destinations; if you are coming on your safari with Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Lake Mburo, Nkuringo is more of a stretch and therefore Buhoma is more preferred.
Nkuringo is the best location to track gorillas, if you are combining it with Golden monkey tracking or the Batwa trail in Mgahinga.
Nkuringo vs Rushaga
Rushaga has the largest number of habituated gorilla families and is ideal for travelers seeking greater permit availability or the Gorilla Habituation Experience, whereas Nkuringo offers a more secluded atmosphere with spectacular panoramic views and fewer visitors.
Nkuringo vs Ruhija
Ruhija is known for birdwatching, cooler temperatures, and moderate trekking.
Nkuringo appeals to adventurous travelers looking for dramatic landscapes and a more physically engaging experience.
Trekking in Nkuringo is more strenuous compared to the trek in Ruhija, but both are so rewarding in experience and gorilla encounter.
At Gorilla Hour, we help you select the sector that best matches your fitness level, travel style, and overall safari itinerary.
